Shirts, polos, and trousers, on the other hand, generally wash well at home if you follow the care label.

Knowing how to remove stains from school uniforms quickly makes all the difference. The best way to remove grass stains from uniforms is to treat them as soon as possible: dab, don't rub, with a stain remover or a solution of white vinegar and water, then wash as normal. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibres.

Ink stains respond well to rubbing alcohol dabbed onto the mark before washing. Food and sauce stains should be rinsed with cold water immediately, then pre-treated. Sweat stains, especially around collars, benefit from a paste of baking soda and water left on for 15 minutes before laundering. For anything stubborn or set-in, a professional cleaner can often lift stains that home treatments can't.

How to keep school uniforms looking new often comes down to what happens after washing. Iron shirts and blouses while slightly damp for crisper results, and always check the fabric setting to avoid scorch marks on synthetic blends.

Hang blazers and jumpers rather than folding them to prevent creasing, and store trousers on clip hangers to maintain a sharp line. Professional pressing is a worthwhile investment for blazers and formal pieces, giving them that just-bought look for parents' evenings, photos, and school events.

A sensible school uniform laundry schedule keeps things simple: shirts and polos should be washed after every wear, trousers and skirts every two to three wears unless visibly dirty, and jumpers or blazers roughly every one to two weeks, or sooner if stained.

Washing too frequently can wear out fabric and fade colours faster, while washing too little invites odour and stubborn stains. Rotating at least two full uniform sets, where possible, makes it much easier to stick to a laundry schedule without last-minute panic on a school morning.
